Option to create password reset disk not on windows 10

Original Title: password reset disk not on windows 10

I got Windows 10 Pro in july. I want to make a Password reset Disk so in case my memory goes bad I will have something to use to get back on my PC. I checked Control Panel ,user account ,then family and then user account again and it is not there,My question is how do I put it there. Do I have to reformat my PC or what.

Hi Wizzie,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

I would like to inform you that the option to create Password reset Disk is only can be created through build-in administrator account. So I suggest you to login into the build in administrator account and check if you can view the option.

Follow the below steps to enable build in administrator account:

1. Right click on the Start menu and select Command prompt (admin).

2. On the command line type: net user administrator /activate:yes and hit Enter on your keyboard.

This will enable your build in Administrator account. Log out from current account and then restart your computer and login with the build-in administrator account. Once you are in the Build-in administrator account, try to check if you can view the option to create Password reset Disk.

Once you have successfully created the Password reset Disk , disable the Build in administrator account by following steps given below:

1. Right click on the start menu and select Command prompt (admin).

2. On the command line type: net user administrator /activate:no and hit Enter on your keyboard.

This will disable the build in administrator account.

Let us know the status of the issue. We will be glad to assist you further.

Thank you.

Hello Wizzie,

Thank you for keeping us posted.

We appreciate your patience on this issue. I would like to assist you with further information from here.

Please be informed that password reset disks apply to local user accounts. If your Windows 10 user account is connected to your Microsoft account, then you can follow the steps outlined here by Microsoft to begin the password reset process: https://account.live.com/ResetPassword.aspx

Now please refer to the below steps to create a Password recovery disk applicable for Local accounts.

  • Log in to your computer under the user account for which you wish to create a password reset disk. Once logged in, connect your USB flash drive to one of your computer’s USB ports.
  •  Open the Start menu ans type control panel into the search. Open the Control Panel by clicking it in the list of search results.
  • In the Control Panel, ensure the View by drop-down at the upper right is set to Category. Then click the User Accounts link. On the screen that follows, click the User Accounts link once more. Doing so will take you to your user account settings.
  • On the left side of the screen, click the link to Create a password reset disk. The password reset disk wizard will open in a new window.
  • In the first screen that opens, click the Next button. In the subsequent screen, select the USB flash drive that you connected to your computer earlier.
  • You’ll be asked to enter your password on the following screen; do so, then click the Next button. The wizard will now create your password reset disk.
  • Ensure you keep your password reset disk in a safe place, as anyone with access to your computer can use it to reset the password for that user account.

Hope the information is helpful. If you need further assistance, feel free to write to us and we would be happy to help you.

Thank You.

Hello Maureen,

We regret the inconvenience. Let me assist you.

Now, before we proceed any further, let us know a few more details on the below questions.

  • What is the exact error message when you say 'I am locked out'?
  • Were you using a Local user account or a Microsoft Account?
  • How many user accounts do you have configured in the PC?

Now, if you forget the administrator password and don't have a password reset disk or another administrator account, you won't be able to reset the password. If there are no other user accounts on the computer, you won't be able to log on to Windows and will need to re-install Windows.

Write to us again for further assistance on the same.

Thank You.

I also have forgotten password for my Windows 10 local users account login. But, fortunately I can still login using another administrator account that I created and for which I still have password.  How can I make this created administrator account my Local user account and then create backup disk (USB thumb drive disk) for it?

So in other words, if you are using only your Microsoft user account to log into Win 10, 'password reset disks' no longer exist.  Right?
